Structure of an essay

For the first time when you write something in IELTS test, you should know the structure. Of course, there are many ways to make a piece of writing, but following some rules will help you get more point in the test.

Here is the structure:

- Topic Sentence

- Paragraph

- Concluding Sentence

Now, we will analyze:

1. Topic Sentence

This sentence should convey the controlling area and contain noun phrases or adjectival phrases. It must be clear and an active sentence.
Besides, it shouldn't be too specific, general and too long.

2. Paragraph

There will be some main ideas that you want to show. Each of them should be developed by one paragraph. A paragraph contains 4-7 sentences and can have up to 3 supporting ideas. If you want to link the paragraphs together, linking words could be used.

2.1. The Starting Paragraph

Note! We could use some "Supporting Ideas" and "Examples" to make our writing more creative.

* Supporting Ideas:
- One sentence to give statement: using complex sentence like relative clause/adverbial clause/prepositional clause
- One sentence to give the conclusion of the previous statement: using the linking words to smooth the explanation: therefore/hence/as a result,... or in contrast/however/meanwhile,...

* Examples:
- To illustrate,...
- For example,...
- According to scientific research,...
- According to social statistics survey,...
- An example of this case is ...

3. Conclusion
- Cover the topic
- Concise

Let's start your writing with this structure. It would be easier for you to organize the ideas.

Have fun!
